The Guardians of the Galaxy is a group of heroes who opposed the Phalanx conquest of the Kree system (and many who had opposed Annihilus’ incursion into their universe), and banded together in an attempt to prevent any further catastrophes from ever occurring.
The team first appeared in the partial reprint title Marvel Super-Heroes with issue #18 (Jan. 1969). They appeared sporadically in several Marvel titles and in the early 1990s, the Guardians starred in a self-titled comic that ran for 62 issues.
A second volume was published in May 2008, written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. The title, set in a different timeline, features a new team, drawn from participants in the Annihilation: Conquest storyline. These Guardians first appeared in “Annihilation: Conquest” #6 (April 2008). A feature film based on this team was released in 2014.
The Guardians of the Galaxy appeared in a new series for Marvel NOW!. In addition to the previous Guardians, Iron Man also joined the team. Later issues of the series saw Angela, Agent Venom, and Captain Marvel join.
Guardians of the Galaxy was later relaunched again as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel. The series sees Peter Quill and Gamora leaving the team, and Rocket becoming the self-appointed new team’s leader, also two new characters were added to the team. Kitty Pryde (taking up the mantle of Star-Lord) and the Thing.
“You can call the Guardians whatever you want to. But to the rest of the galaxy, all the people we’ve helped crawl out from under you and crap like you…the Guardians are the good guys. Not to brag, but we actually go out of our way to help people. We help people who can’t help themselves.”
